It’s the most iconic and famous temple in Chiang Rai Province, drawing visitors from around the world. When I first visited in 2014, the surroundings were still under construction, but it was already a Top Place to Visit.

Behind the temple, you’ll find a pavilion with fascinating artwork that is free to enter and well worth a visit.

To avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting early, ideally before 8:00 AM. Additionally, it’s better to skip souvenirs here as they tend to be more expensive than in the city center.

Inside these buildings, you’ll find an eclectic array of art, including:

The Artist Behind Baan Dam:
Designed by Thawan Duchanee, who started the project in 1975, The Black House reflects his unique vision and life philosophy. Duchanee lived in several of the houses over the years, making it not just a museum but also a deeply personal space.

The Meaning of Baan Dam:
«Baan» means house, and «Dam» means black, referring to the complex. Some interpret the Black House as representing the dark, evil, and torturous side of life, contrasting with Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), which symbolizes innocence, virtue, and the aspiration toward heaven.

Take a boat tour along the Mekong River, where you’ll pass by scenic landscapes and see the exact points where the three countries converge. While the river water may be muddy, the boat ride offers a unique perspective on the region’s geography and life along the riverbanks.

You can explore the Golden Triangle on a guided tour or a day trip from Chiang Rai (or even Chiang Mai). I highly recommend hiring a private driver. They can take you to hidden gems, local Buddhist temples, off-the-beaten-path spots in Chiang Rai Province, and provide valuable insights into your itinerary.

If you are interested in history, visiting the Golden Triangle and its surroundings is one of the highlights of Chiang Rai Province.

Whenever I return to Chiang Rai, I always ride a motorbike from Chiang Rai to the Golden Triangle. Along the way, there are often police checkpoints due to drug trafficking. Don’t be alarmed if the police stop you to check your International Driving License.

5. Wat Huay Pla Kang Temple – Best Sunset in Chiang Rai

When exploring the temples of Chiang Rai Province, be sure to visit Wat Huay Pla Kang, a unique and peaceful attraction known for its remarkable architecture and Big Buddha.

7. Choui Fong Tea Plantation – Best Tea Plantation in The Golden Triangle

If you love tea or simply enjoy stunning views, Choui Fong Tea Plantation is a must-see.
