Khao Lak is a peaceful and beautiful destination just north of Phuket, perfect for travelers seeking a laid-back atmosphere away from the crowds. In this post, I’ll share the best Khao Lak things to do based on my personal experience.

After visiting Khao Lak three times, I’ve explored different ways to get there and discovered some of the top activities in the area. Below, you’ll find helpful insights and recommendations to make the most of your trip.

Where is Khao Lak in Thailand?

Khao Lak is located in Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand, about 80 kilometers north of Phuket International Airport. Situated along the Andaman Sea, it’s known for its peaceful beaches, lush national parks, and laid-back vibe.

If you check a Khao Lak map, you’ll find it’s conveniently near Phuket, making it easily accessible by road. This destination is also a gateway to popular attractions like the Similan Islands, Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, and Khao Sok National Park. Perfect for a mix of beach relaxation and nature exploration!

How to Get to Khao Lak from Phuket

By Bus

The bus from Phuket to Khao Lak is an affordable option, with tickets priced around 150 THB. The journey takes about three hours. I’ve taken the bus on several occasions; while the ride is comfortable, expect occasional delays—once, the air conditioning broke down midway, forcing us to stop for repairs.

If you’re in a rush, booking tickets through 12GoAsia online is an option, but it can be more expensive than buying tickets directly at Phuket Bus Terminal 2.

By Taxi

A taxi is the fastest and most convenient option. It takes about 90 minutes and costs between 1,500-2,000 THB. Taxis are available at Phuket Airport, any hotel or you can book them in advance through 12GoAsia. This is ideal if you have heavy luggage or want to get to Khao Lak without delays.

Best Things to Do in Khao Lak

1. Khao Lak Tsunami Museum: A Sobering Experience

One of the most meaningful attractions in Khao Lak is the Khao Lak Tsunami Museum. It tells the story of the devastating 2004 tsunami that struck the area.

The museum, located near Bang Niang Market, is free to enter and features powerful exhibits, including photographs, relics, and a large police boat swept inland by the tsunami. It’s a deeply emotional and humbling place to learn about the region’s resilience.

The Impossible movie (2012)  The story of a family of tourists in Thailand caught up in the destruction and chaos left behind by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was shot in Khao Lak.

2. Pakarang Beach and Memories Bar: For Surfing and Sunset Views

For a relaxed day, head to Pakarang Beach (Coral Beach), which is fantastic for swimming and sunbathing. However, If you’re a surfer, the waves here are good from November to April.

Plenty of surf board rental shops.  Nearby, Memories Bar offers a great spot to enjoy drinks while watching the sun set over the Andaman Sea (there is good WIFI). It’s an unhurried place with a laid-back vibe—a perfect end to a day at the beach.

If you want to get to Pakarang Beach by scooter or motorbike, the road is not the best, it is not paved and in some sections there are potholes and stones. Go slowly.

3. Khao Lak Turtle Sanctuary: A Free, Unique Experience

Another must-visit is the Khao Lak Turtle Sanctuary, a free attraction dedicated to rehabilitating sea turtles. You will see from small to big turtles.

It’s an educational and peaceful place where you can learn about the turtles’ rehabilitation process and see them in various stages of growth.

The sanctuary is inside a military base. The full name of it is: Sea Turtle Conservation Center & Tsunami Memorial (Phang Nga Base, Third Naval Area Command). So, you’ll need to show your passport to gain access.

The officer will keep your document in a box along with other passports or identifications and will return it to you once you leave the premises.

Once you have left the document there, continue straight until you see the next photo of the golf course and turn left.

Next to the Sea Turtle Conservation Center there is a coffee shop and the beach, where you can hang out.

At the end of the photo you can sea the beach, it is a quiet area. There are some souvenirs like t-shirts, in case you want something to remember the place.

4. Takuapa Old Town (Talat Yai): A Cultural Escape

Take a short ride to Takuapa Old Town to step back in time. This historical area, known for its Sino-Portuguese architecture, is full of narrow streets and local shops.

On Sundays, the walking market is a highlight, with street food, handmade crafts, and live performances.

5. The Boon Soong Iron Bridge: A Journey Through Time

Built in 1965 at the height of Takua Pa’s tin-mining boom, the Boon Soong Iron Bridge is a remarkable piece of the town’s history.

Stretching 200 meters over the Takua Pa River, this engineering marvel was constructed using materials from decommissioned tin dredging vessels, reflecting the ingenuity of early 20th-century design.

More than just a transportation link, the bridge is a symbol of Takua Pa’s industrial heritage and cultural evolution. Visiting this historic site offers a unique window into the region’s past, making it a must-see for travelers who appreciate stories of resilience and progress.

6. Samnaksong Ban Dok Daeng Temple (สำนักสงฆ์บ้านดอกแดง)

Samnaksong Ban Dok Daeng Temple. On the way to Talat Yai (just 10 minutes by car) is this nice and quiet Buddhist temple situated on an elevated level with a beautiful view. 

7. Ko Kho Khao Island: A Tranquil Getaway

For an even more serene experience, take a boat ride to Ko Kho Khao Island. From Baan Nam Kem Pier (just a few minutes by ferry or small boat). This quiet, unspoiled island is a haven for those seeking peace and natural beauty.

 You can even bring your scooter along on the boat to explore the island at your leisure. With its pristine beaches and lush surroundings, it’s the perfect place to unwind.

8. Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park and Museum

While in the area, visit the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park and Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum near Baan Nam Khem Pier. (Both places are free).

 The memorial park honors the victims of the 2004 tsunami, while the museum provides insights into the local fishing community’s rebuilding efforts after the disaster.

9. Similan Islands National Park: Snorkeling Paradise

For those who enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving, Similan Islands National Park is a must-see. The park is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, home to an abundance of marine life. It’s one of the top snorkeling spots in Thailand and a must-visit for anyone staying in Khao Lak.

Similan is a Yawi or Malay word meaning nine or a group of nine islands. It is located in Tambon Ko Phra Thong and covers an area of ​​32,000 acres. It was declared a national park in 1982.

On my first trip to Khao Lak I booked a day trip to the Similan Islands. They offer food and snorkelling.
