Sin Sombun Market
Sin Sombun Market is a lively daily fresh market in Chiang Saen, offering an array of fresh produce, street food, and traditional Thai goods. Motorbike Rental in Chiang Saen
In CS Motorbike Rental, scooters (125cc Honda Click) are available in very good condition, offering reasonable prices and efficient service. As with many other scooter rentals in Thailand, some of the helmets may not be the best quality, and a few could be in poor condition. It’s recommended to inspect the helmets before use to ensure safety and comfort during your ride.

The most budget-friendly option is taking a local bus from Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen. Buses depart from the Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 (Old Bus Station) and take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Expect a simple but affordable ride, with tickets costing around 50-70 THB.
🏍 Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen by Motorbike or Car
For a more scenic and flexible trip, you can ride a motorbike or drive from Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen. The journey takes about 1.5 hours (60 km) via Highway 1290, offering beautiful views along the Mekong River. On my second visit to Chiang Saen, I rode a motorbike from Chiang Rai and was able to explore some hill tribe villages. What an incredible ride!

If you’re coming from Chiang Mai to Chiang Saen, the best option is to take a bus to Chiang Rai first (about 3–4 hours). From there, transfer to a local bus or hire a private car for the final stretch to Chiang Saen.

CS is a great place for a visa run from Thailand to Laos. You can travel from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong, which is the main border crossing into Laos at the Friendship Bridge (Huay Xai). From Chiang Khong, you can take a slow boat or speedboat to Luang Prabang, Laos.

If you want to travel from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong, you can take a local songthaew (shared pickup truck taxi) or hire a private taxi. The distance is about 45 km, and the journey takes around 1 hour. Chiang Khong is an important border town for those crossing into Laos.

The Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ) is located along the Mekong River in Ton Pheung District, Bokeo Province, Laos. Established in 2007, it was developed through a partnership between the Lao government and the Chinese-owned, Hong Kong-registered Kings Romans Group with the goal of boosting economic development in Northern Laos.
The area is dominated by the Kings Romans Casino, which primarily attracts Chinese tourists. Alongside the casino, the zone features hotels, restaurants, and entertainment complexes, positioning itself as a major gambling destination in Southeast Asia. This development is part of a wider trend of casino expansion in the Mekong region, following the 2014 crackdown on money laundering in Macau.
